Brookwater Classic Cycle Challenge
July, 2008
More than 400 cyclists will gather at Springfield Central on Sunday 13 July to raise money through pedal power for breast cancer sufferers around Australia.
This year's Brookwater Classic Cycle Challenge will see Brisbane residents and corporates travel a combined distance of 16,000km to raise money for The Wesley Hospital Kim Walters Choices Program.
Springfield Land Corporation Chairman Dr Maha Sinnathamby said in light of the recent tragic passing of breast cancer advocate Jane McGrath, now more than ever is the time to be aware of this serious disease.
"The passing of Jane McGrath has brought to the forefront the seriousness of this illness which has claimed the lives of so many women," Dr Sinnathamby said.
"Jane and Kim Walters were strong women who suffered greatly at the hands of breast cancer, as do thousands of women around Australia each year.
"Last year the competitors helped raise valuable monies for charity and this year we are hoping to do even better."
Dr Sinnathamby said the Brookwater Classic Cycle Challenge is not only an opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause, it also promotes health and wellbeing among the Springfield community.
"The Brookwater Classic Cycle Challenge demonstrates how residents and visitors can lead an active and healthy lifestyle in South East Queensland's great outdoors," he said.
"The Challenge allows cyclists to take advantage of Springfield's smart urban design and is a fun day out for the whole family. I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Sunday morning than to be out and about in Springfield."
The day begins with the Corporate Challenge where teams of two to four cyclists participate in relay challenges along Sinnathamby Boulevard at Greater Springfield. All teams will complete 13 laps of the circuit (40km in total).
Following the Corporate Challenge, individual cyclists compete in the Pro Race for a chance to win a slice of $3000 in prize money provided by Springfield Land Corporation.
Dr Sinnathamby said it is impressive to see so many cyclists planning to take part in the Challenge which began in 2004.
"The Challenge has become a highly-anticipated event on the calendar and I am proud to see cyclists from near and far taking part," he said.
The Kim Walters Choices Program aims to provide physical and emotional recovery to cancer patients following diagnosis through information, friendship and support.
